The Secret to Beautiful Senior Photos? It's All About the Light
If you've been following along with me for a while, you know I used to be *obsessed* with golden hour. And honestly? I still am! There's nothing quite like that dreamy, warm glow just before sunset. But here's what I've learned after photographing countless seniors in Newnan and beyond: beautiful light can happen at any time of day you just need to know how to find it (or create it!).
When the Sun Isn't Playing Nice
Let me paint you a picture: It's the middle of a bright afternoon, the sun is beaming down, and we've got your senior session scheduled. In the past, I might have panicked a little. But now? I've got a whole toolkit of techniques to make sure you look absolutely stunning, no matter what time your session happens to be.
One of my favorite tools is my off-camera flash. I know what you might be thinking—flash in the middle of the day? Trust me on this one! It lets me light your face beautifully even when the sun is creating those unflattering shadows that nobody wants in their senior photos.
I also love working with my trusty reflector. Think of it as a magic wand that bounces light exactly where we need it. Sometimes I'll angle it just right to create that perfect glow on your face. Other times, I'll actually use it to *block* harsh sunlight it's surprisingly versatile!
The Art of the "Scooch"
Here's a little behind-the-scenes secret: if you're ever perfectly posed during your session and I suddenly ask you to scooch over just a tiny bit, it's usually because I'm chasing the perfect light. Maybe I've spotted an amazing patch of shade, or I need to position you so the sun creates a gorgeous backlight instead of those harsh shadows.
It might seem like I'm being picky (okay, maybe I am a little!), but it's all in service of making sure your photos are everything you've dreamed of. Because here's the thing about light—get it wrong, and your skin can look "blown out," which means it's so bright that all the beautiful details of your face disappear. And we definitely don't want that!
Finding the Perfect Spot
On bright days, I'm always looking for natural blockers—trees, buildings, even positioning you so your body blocks the direct sunlight on your face. It's like a puzzle, and I love figuring out how all the pieces fit together to create something beautiful.
So if you're worried about scheduling your senior session on a day that isn't perfectly overcast or right at sunset, don't be! With a little creativity and the right tools, we can make magic happen anytime. The light is always there—sometimes we just have to work a little harder to find it.
And honestly? Some of my favorite images have come from sessions where I had to get creative with challenging light. There's something special about turning a tricky situation into something beautiful.
*Ready to schedule your senior session? Let's chase some light together golden hour or not!*
Overcast
In this photo it was an overcast day. We used off camera flash, but the sky was the perfect shade of grey to accent Sara's skin. This was at Line Creek Nature area.
Bright Sun
This is at Line Creek Nature area- same location as Sarah and as you can see the sun was bright, but we used the diffusion of the trees and Natalie herself to block the sun.
Golden Hour
Here you can see we caught the light at the perfect time. I still used a reflector to catch some light on Lila's face. This is at Line Creek just like the other two. You can see three different days and three different results!
